LIVE The elections in Angola represented a historical moment in the life of this great country. The MPLA got 81,64 percent confirming the victory in the 2008 legislative elections, with a qualified majority (two thirds), as well as it is the party of the majority of the Angolans that conquered a smashing advantage at the level of the 18 provinces. With this result, the electorate manifested a vote of confidence important in Government stability, which integrates 34 ministers and three secretaries of State, empowered on October 3, 2008, by His Excellency Sir President of the Republic, Engineer José Eduardo dos Santos. After 16 years without elections - the only ones held since independence, very turbulent ones, were in 1992 -, the Angolan people responded massively to the civic call, on September 5, 2008, and deposited their votes in the ballot boxes to renew the National Assembly. This time the environment was of enthusiasm by part of more than eight million voters who voted in the 12 thousand vote Assemblies installed in the 18 provinces of the Country. Ten parties and four coalitions, namely MPLA, UNITA, FNLA, PRS (Social Renovation Party), PLD (Liberal Democratic Party), FpD (Front for Democracy), PDP-ANA (Democratic Party for the Progress s and Angolan National Alliance), PRD (Renovator Democratic Party), PAJOCA (Party of the Alliance Labouring Peasant Youth of Angola), PADEPA (Democratic Support and Angola Progress Party), AD Coalition, FOFAC (Angolan Fraternal Forum), New Democracy - ND and PPE (Electoral Politic Platform) rallied for the election being defeated by MPLA with over 81 percent of the votes. The MPLA won the 2008 legislative elections, receiving 5,266,216 votes. In the current legislature the MPLA occupy 191 of the 220 seats in the National Assembly. UNITA received 670,363 votes in the election and occupy 16 seats in the National Assembly. Social the Renovator Party finished third in the election with 204,746 votes (8 seats in the National Assembly). The FNLA received 71,416 votes (three seats) and Coalition New Democracy (ND) 77,141 votes (two seats) and. The two parties occupy fourth and fifth place in the National Assembly. Deputies assumed their functions in the National Assembly on September 30, 2008. This victory is the resulted of the Angolan people political maturity who does not want to lose the conquests achieved in the last years: peace, national reconciliation, reconstruction and the economic growth. “The country gives to the world an example of democratic participation and civility. We initiate a new cycle and a new way of making politics. It is a victory of democracy”, said President José Eduardo dos Santos. |
