Lions, the most social felids, live in prides composed of 2 to 12 adult females and their cubs. Pride females care for cubs together, defend their hunting grounds, and protect the cubs from groups of adult males.

Native to Africa, the ostrich, Struthio camelus, is the largest living species of bird, growing to a height of approximately 2.4 m (8 ft) and a weight of 150 kg (330 lb). Although flightless, the ostrich can run at speeds as high as 65 km/hr (40 mph). The adaptable ostrich can be found living in rocky mountainous areas, open savanna, or sandy desert plains. It is omnivorous, eating grass, the foliage of trees and bushes, and any small invertebrate and vertebrate animalist can chase down.

African and Asian elephants differ in size, color, and other physical characteristics. The African elephant can be distinguished by its larger size and broader ears that drape over its shoulders. Males, or bulls, may reach 4 m (13 ft) in height and weigh 7000 kg (15,400 lb). Females, or cows, are shorter, averaging 2.8 m (9 ft) in height, and weigh considerably less, about 3600 kg (7900 lb). African elephants are light gray in color, although they can appear dark gray, red, or brown from the mud they bathe in. They have a low, flat forehead and a slightly swayed back. Their fan-shaped ears average 1.5 m (5 ft) in length and 1.2 m (4 ft) in width. Both bulls and cows have long, curved tusks.

The giraffe, like most mammals, has only seven neck vertebrae, which are greatly elongated to support its extremely long and muscular neck. Due to the great distance between the animal's heart and head, its vascular system is equipped with valves so that sufficient blood reaches the brain. The giraffe has keen senses of smell and hearing, and exceptional eyesight. The long, flexible tongue and long, muscular upper lip are used to rip leaves from branches. Both sexes have two or four short, blunt, skin-covered horns.
