About the Embassy

A History of Canadian Diplomatic Representation in the U.S.

The Washington Legation, led by Vincent Massey, opened in 1927. It was Canada's very first diplomatic post abroad.

The small original Chancery staff grew significantly during World War II. And, in 1943, the Legation was raised in status to an Embassy.

Geography has made us neighbors. History has made us friends. Economics has made us partners, and necessity has made us allies.” John F. Kennedy, May 17, 1961. Find out what other Presidential quotations are engraved in stone in the U.S. Embassy building in Ottawa .
